Vehicle Description On the lot now is a true headturner of a car, a Sublime Green 1970 Plymouth Road Runner.
Introduced in 1968, the Plymouth Road Runner was brought to market because Plymouth felt that the original muscle cars were moving away from their roots as relatively cheap, fast cars as they gained more options and increased in price.
In response, Plymouth developed the Road Runner as a counterpart to its high-trim GTX.
It was an instant hit.
Sales for the Road Runner went through the roof, and the car was so well-received that it won Motortrend's Car of the Year award for 1968.
After two years of production, the 1970 model year brought the Road Runner new front and rear end looks to the basic 1968 body, proving again to be another smash hit.
Updates for 1970 included a new grille, cloth & vinyl bench seat, hood, front fenders, quarter panels, single-piston Kelsey-Hayes disc brakes (improved from the rather small-rotor Bendix 4 piston calipers of '68 - '69 ), and even non-functional scoops in the rear quarters.
This exemplary Road Runner is optioned with a period-correct 383 C.
I.
V8 paired to a 4-barrel carburetor.
In addition, power is supplied to the rear wheels through the original 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission.
This green Plymouth is also fitted out with power steering, power brakes, functional Road Runner gauges (such as a working factory tachometer and clock), vented windows, a heater, and a dual exhaust system.
The interior has been restored to its original condition, and the bench seats are in absolutely incredible condition.
Sitting in this green Plymouth is made very comfortable through the restoration! In order to effectively burn rubber, this Plymouth rides on some original-style steel wheels on top of a nice set of BF Goodrich RWL tires.
This Road Runner is also optioned with a functional Air Grabber hood that supplied extra air for the engine as speeds increased.
This was done through the use of a switch below the dash that actuates a vacuum servo to slowly raise the forward-facing scoop, exposing shark-like teeth decals on either side of the vent.
This green monster of a Plymouth really does put the Runner in Road Runner, and drives like a jet engine on four wheels.
Being behind the wheel of this piece of Mopar legend is a smile waiting to happen.
This Sublime Plymouth is just waiting for the right person to let it loose on the streets again! Fender tag decoded as follows:
