While the automotive market shifted towards larger and larger cars with larger V8s that didn't make much power, Pontiac decided to go all in with turbocharging on a V8 platform.
While Buick was using a 6-cylinder, Ford a 4-cylinder, the Turbo-Trans Ams offered a glimpse into the future of performance with technology that seemed almost alien to drivers then, but is extremely commonplace today.
In 1980, Pontiac was invited to pace the 64th Indy 500 with its newly restyled Firebird.
To commemorate the occasion, Pontiac built just 5,700 Firebird Pace Car replicas to sell to the public at a high premium.
